Portable Cattle Scales: Types, Prices and How to Choose

Updated November 2, 2026
The short answer: a portable cattle scale is a livestock scale you can move between pens, pastures and working facilities: load bars that go under a chute or platform, a cage scale on casters, or a platform-and-cage system you can set up where the cattle are. At Liberty, portable load bar kits start at $573.99, a portable 5' x 7' cage system is $2,873.99, and a USA-made cattle cage system runs $3,735.99 to $4,599.99. Choose by your heaviest animal, how often you move the scale, and how you'll get cattle on and off. Below: the types, what to look for, prices, and how to get accurate weights in the field.
Types of portable cattle scales
Load bars under a chute or platform
The most portable option. A pair of weigh bars and an indicator go under your squeeze chute, alley platform or a deck you build, and come out again when you move. Liberty's LS-WB and LS-919-HD kits run up to 20,000 lb. See our load bars guide for sizing.
Portable cage systems
A platform with a cage that holds one animal at a time. They're quicker to use than building a setup around load bars, and the cage keeps cattle on the platform. Liberty offers a 5' x 7' (60" x 84") portable cage system and a larger 10' x 7' (120" x 84") platform cage system, plus the USA-made LS-930 cattle cage system in 5,000 lb x 1 lb and 10,000 lb x 2 lb versions.
Calf cages
For calves at birth and weaning, a smaller cage on casters such as the LS-930 5' x 30" cage (2,000 lb, 0.5 lb accuracy) is easier to move and use. Our calf scale guide covers it.
Portable vs permanent cattle scales
| Portable scale | Permanent alleyway scale | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Moves between sites; set up where cattle are | Fixed in the working alley |
| Best for | Multiple pastures, leased ground, custom work | One central handling facility |
| Ground | Needs a firm, level spot each time | Installed once on a pad |
| Liberty examples | LS-WB and LS-919-HD load bars; LS-930 cage systems | LS-929 alleyway scale |
What to look for in a portable cattle scale
- Capacity: your heaviest animal plus the cage or chute, with a margin. Mature bulls are commonly 1,700 to 2,300 lb; see our cow weight chart. Never load a scale beyond its rated capacity.
- Readability: 1 lb or 2 lb steps suit grown cattle; calves benefit from finer steps.
- Platform size: long enough for the animal to stand fully on it, with all four feet on the deck.
- Power: a rechargeable indicator (the LS-WB uses the LS-7516 rechargeable indicator) lets you weigh where there's no outlet.
- Moving it: casters, lift points and weight of the system decide how easily one or two people can move it.
- Durability: protected cables and weather-resistant indicators matter outdoors.

How a portable scale pays for itself
- Dosing by real weight instead of a guess, so treatments are neither wasted nor too weak.
- Weaning weights that show which cows earn their keep. In NDSU's Dickinson herd, calves averaged 558 lb at weaning over five years; records like these start with a scale.
- Sale timing: knowing weights before you ship helps you sell at the right time and check the sale-barn ticket.
- Feeding: rations and pasture plans built on actual weights.
Getting accurate weights in the field
- Set up on firm, level ground. Use mats, timbers or a pad if the ground is soft.
- Zero the scale before the first animal and whenever manure builds up.
- Keep the load only on the scale: no gate, panel or fence touching the platform.
- Let each animal settle before you record the weight.
- Check with a known weight after every move; see our test weights guide.
If you sell cattle by weight on your own scale, your state may require a legal-for-trade scale that has been inspected or sealed. Check with your state weights and measures office, and have a qualified scale technician install and certify it.

Portable cattle scale FAQs
How much does a portable cattle scale cost?
As of November 2, 2026, Liberty's portable options range from $573.99 for an LS-WB load bar kit to $4,599.99 for the 10,000 lb USA-made LS-930 cage system.
Are portable cattle scales accurate?
They can be very accurate when set on firm, level ground, zeroed before use, and kept free of anything touching the platform. Check them with a known weight after each move.
What capacity do I need for cattle?
Your heaviest animal plus the weight of the cage or chute, with a margin. Mature bulls are commonly 1,700 to 2,300 lb, so many producers choose 5,000 lb or more.
Can I put a portable scale under my squeeze chute?
Yes. Load bars are designed for that; size them for the chute's weight plus your heaviest animal.
Do I need a legal-for-trade scale to sell cattle?
If your scale's weight sets the sale price, your state may require a legal-for-trade scale that has been inspected or sealed. Check with your state weights and measures office.
