Calf Scales: How to Choose the Right Calf Weighing Scale

Calf Scales: How to Choose the Right Calf Weighing Scale

Updated October 15, 2026

The short answer: most dairies and cow-calf operations are best served by a portable calf scale rated around 2,000 lb, either a low ramped platform or a cage that keeps the calf centered, with an indicator that settles the reading while the calf moves. Size it above your heaviest animal, pick a format your calves will walk onto calmly, and make sure it can go where you work. Below: how to choose, the Liberty calf scales that fit each job, current prices, and how to get a weight you can trust.

Why weigh calves?

Calf weights drive decisions you make every week:

  • Dosing. Vaccines, dewormers and other treatments are dosed by body weight. A scale takes the guesswork out.
  • Growth tracking. Birth and weaning weights, plus check weights in between, show which calves are on target and which need attention.
  • Feeding. Real weights let you match milk replacer and rations to each calf instead of the pen average.
  • Selling. When calves sell by the pound, an accurate weight is the price.

What capacity calf scale do you need?

Start with the heaviest animal that will ever stand on the scale, then choose a model rated comfortably above it. Headroom matters: a calf that jumps or leans loads the platform harder for a moment than its standing weight. Never load a scale beyond its rated capacity. It can damage the load cells and throw off every reading after.

  • Newborn to weaned calves, sheep, goats and hogs: a 2,000 lb calf scale covers this with plenty of room.
  • Feeder calves that will keep growing: consider an alleyway scale or larger cage now, so the same scale grows with them.
  • Calves and mature cattle on one scale: step up to a 5,000 lb or larger cage, an alleyway scale or a weigh beam system. Our cattle scales buyer's guide covers those options.

Calf scale types: cage, platform or alleyway

Cage calf scales

A cage puts side panels and gates around the weighing platform, so the calf is contained and stays centered while you read the weight. It is the easiest format for one handler weighing one animal at a time, especially with nervous calves.

Low platform calf scales

A low, ramped platform is quick to set up and easy for small animals to step onto. It suits calves, sheep, goats and vet work, and it can be moved by hand between barns.

Alleyway scales

An alleyway scale sits in line with your working alley, so animals walk on, get weighed and walk off. It fits operations that weigh groups in sequence and want one scale for calves through yearlings.

Portable calf scales

A calf scale that goes to the pen gets used far more than one that sits in a corner. The LS-930 5' x 30" cage rolls on swivel casters, two of which lock during weighing, and its height adjusts with the included wrench. The LS-920-2K has carrying handles, wheels and ramped ends, and its LS-7515-C indicator runs on a rechargeable battery, so you can weigh where there is no outlet. After any move, set the scale on firm, level ground and zero it before the first calf.

Weight tape vs a calf scale

A weight tape estimates body weight from the heart girth measurement. It is cheap and handy for a rough check in the pasture, but it is an estimate, and how close it comes depends on breed, age and body condition. When the number sets a drug dose, a ration or a sale price, a scale gives you a measured weight you can record and compare over time.

Features that make calf weighing easier

  • A steady reading on a moving animal. Calves rarely stand still. Ask how the indicator settles the weight on a restless animal before you buy.
  • Sure footing. Tread-plate decks and ramped ends, as on the LS-920-2K, help calves step on calmly and stay put.
  • Accumulation mode. The LS-7510-SS indicator on the LS-930 can total weights across a session, handy when you weigh a group and need the combined figure.
  • Data output. If weights go into a spreadsheet or herd software, check for a data port. The LS-922 includes an RS232 port, with a wireless option available.
  • Battery power. A rechargeable indicator lets you weigh in barns and pens with no power.

How to get an accurate calf weight

  1. Set up on firm, level ground. Concrete is best. On soft ground, put a solid base under the feet, then level the scale.
  2. Zero the scale before the first calf and again if mud or manure builds up on the deck.
  3. Keep handling quiet. Let the calf settle for a few seconds before you record the weight.
  4. Weigh at the same time of day. Feed and water change live weight, so consistent timing makes readings comparable.
  5. Record every weight with the tag number and date, so you can track gain over time.
  6. Clean the platform after each session and keep the cable and indicator dry.

Selling calves by weight

If the weight sets the price, your state may require a legal-for-trade scale that has been inspected or sealed before commercial use. Rules vary, so check with your state weights and measures office before you buy, and have a qualified scale technician handle setup and certification. Our guide to NTEP and legal-for-trade scales explains the basics. For your own records, such as dosing and growth, a standard livestock scale is usually enough.

Liberty livestock scales are factory calibrated before they ship. After a move, a hard impact or any doubt about a reading, have a qualified scale technician check it, and follow the maintenance steps in the manual.

Calf scale FAQs

What size scale do I need to weigh calves?

For calves, sheep, goats and hogs, a 2,000 lb scale such as the LS-930 5' x 30" cage or the LS-920-2K covers most needs. If the same scale will weigh grown cattle, choose a larger cage like the LS-930 6' x 30" (up to 10,000 lb) or an alleyway scale.

How much does a calf scale cost?

As of October 15, 2026, Liberty's calf and small-livestock scales range from $299 for the LS-922 vet scale and $499 for the LS-920-2K up to $1,723.99 for the LS-930 5' x 30" cage. Larger LS-930 cages for adult cattle start at $2,873.99. Check each product page for the current price.

Is a cage better than an open platform for calves?

A cage keeps the calf contained and centered, which makes weighing faster and calmer for one handler. An open platform is lighter and quicker to move, and works well for small or quiet animals.

Can I move a calf scale between barns?

Yes. The LS-930 cage rolls on casters, and the LS-920-2K has handles and wheels. After moving, set the scale on level ground and zero it before weighing.

Is a weight tape accurate enough for calves?

A weight tape gives an estimate from heart girth, and its accuracy varies with breed, age and condition. It works for a rough check, but a scale gives a measured weight for dosing, feeding and selling.
