About OHAUS Weighing Balance Scales

OHAUS Corporation is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of balances and scales. Their products are used in laboratory, industrial, education, and specialty markets. They are a global company, with headquarters in New Jersey and offices in Latin America, Europe, and Asia.

OHAUS was founded in 1907 by Gustav Ohaus. He had decided to move on from his career in metalworking to start a business with his father Karl, who was a highly skilled scale mechanic.

Initially, OHAUS was a scale repair business working from Newark, New Jersey. However, in 1912, the business began selling the OHAUS Harvard Trip Balance, a two pan balance scale with built-in sliding masses. The scale became extremely popular with business owners because of its durability, efficiency, and simplicity.

Shortly after the release of their first scale, the business was incorporated as Newark Scale Works. In the next few years, they patented several inventions, including the self-aligning agate bearing, which made scales more efficient.

OHAUS also began using die-case bases which provided closer tolerances compared to sand castings. The combination of Gustav’s metallurgical knowledge and Karl’s craftsmanship made the business extremely successful.

In the late 1940s, the business was incorporated as the OHAUS Scale Corporation and opened a new factory in Union, New Jersey. In the next couple of decades, OHAUS introduced several innovations into the market including magnetic damping and affordable balances made for school students.

By the 1980s, OHAUS was producing the world’s best precision electronic balances. These products featured high-quality digital displays and electronic weighing mechanisms that could instantly provide accurate results.
